A meowmy's guide to pretty yet dangerous CNY plants
With lunar new year happening in a few days, many families have started to decorate and paint their homes with fresh flowers and plants. This is due to the belief that flower blossoms help in ushering of wealth and fortune. However, many of these plants may not be safe for our feline family members.
In this article, we will distinguish which of these popular CNY plants are best kept away from our cat’s reach!
Lucky Bamboo
The Lucky Bamboo is a popular choice during CNY as it was once used to furnish altars worshipping the Goddess Of Mercy. Besides, it is also not just pretty aesthetics but symbolises luck and strength too!
Contrary to its name, the Lucky Bamboo is not a bamboo and contains mild level of toxic in its stems and leaves which is poisonous for cats when consumed.
Money plant aka Devil’s Ivy
The Devil’s Ivy, also known as money plant due to its coin-shaped leaves, signifies fortune and good luck!
However, it is definitely not the same for our cats as, when chewed on, it causes intense pain in the mouth and throat for them.
Flamingo Lily
Blossoming flowers is a symbol of prosperity. In the case of Flamingo lilies, there are decked in either red or pink heart-shaped flowers.
But, similar to other lilies, it contains a compound that is highly poisonous to cats. In fact, the whole plant is toxic and the harm it causes cats is so severe that even the water of the vase should be kept away.
Bonsai
Bonsais are believed to have the ability to draw life energies into a room and spread them to all who pass through. They are also good natural air purifiers!
However, some types of bonsais are poisonous to cats - the Fig Bonsai, Cherry Bonsai and Baby Jade bonsai being the more commonly known ones.
Calamondin Orange Tree
Probably the most common plant bought in Singapore during Lunar New Year, the Calamondin Orange Tree is seen as a good-luck symbol for a fruitful and wealthy year!
The leaves and flowers of the calamondin orange can, however, cause upset stomach and serious skin irriration in cats.
If you notice or suspect that your cat has eaten any of these plants, take her to your veterinarian immediately.
