Imagine a rushing river. The current is strong, and you need to get to the other side.
The only way to do that is to jump from one stepping stone to another - the stepping stones are far apart and every time you leap you take a huge risk.
You felt safe standing on your solid rock despite the swirling water. Jumping means abandoning that safety and the terror of not knowing if your other foot is going to land where you want it to.
Why can't I just stay on this safe rock forever?
This is why transitions are hard: aside from their inherent difficulty, the stress and the fear force your brain to focus on all the things that are bad.
Now for something counterintuitive: instead of feeling overwhelmed by the negative, can I even see the things that are good?
I am strong. I have overcome difficult things before. I don't need to stay on this boring rock when there is so much of this river to see.
How lucky that I get to navigate this, to choose to make this leap.
Thank you for the beauty and my faith and this adventure.
It’s gratitude. The way to get through difficult things is the exercise of gratitude.
And we hope you practice that in the month of October :)
